How to Level an RV
Leveling isn't about comfort — well, not only. An off-level rig means doors that swing shut, tanks that read wrong, sleep with a list, and for many rigs an absorption fridge quietly cooking itself. The job takes ten minutes with a $30 kit of blocks and a bubble level, as long as you do the two axes in the right order.
The order that makes it easy
Side-to-side first, while still hitched. Front-to-back second, after unhitching. Side-to-side requires moving the wheels onto blocks, which needs the tow vehicle; front-to-back is just the tongue jack. Reverse the order and you'll be re-doing both.
1. Read the site
Park roughly where the rig will live and put a bubble level on the floor (or check your phone's level app on the kitchen counter, or exterior-mounted levels if fitted). Note which side is low and by roughly how much — each inch of lift at the wheels is about one block layer.
2. Lift the low side onto blocks
Lay leveling blocks — interlocking Lego-style pads or lumber — in front of (or behind) the tires on the low side, ramped so the tires can climb. Creep the rig onto them until the side-to-side bubble centers. Every tire on that side gets full support: on tandem axles, block both wheels, never one.
3. Chock, then unhitch
Chock the tires on both sides now, while the tow vehicle still holds the trailer. Then unhitch: weight off the hitch via the tongue jack, coupler released, chains and wiring off, tow vehicle pulled clear. (The full sequence, including sway-control removal, lives in the campsite setup checklist.)
4. Level front-to-back with the tongue jack
Run the tongue jack up or down — on a foot plate or block, never bare soft ground — until the front-to-back bubble centers. Motorhomes skip this dance: run the hydraulic auto-level, but still verify with a bubble; sensors drift.
5. Stabilizers last, and only for stability
Drop the scissor jacks (or corner stabilizers) until they're firmly snug against pads — snug, not lifting. They kill the bounce when someone walks the aisle; they are not rated to carry the trailer's weight, and cranking them into lifting duty is how frames and jack mounts get bent.
The five-minute rule of thumb
Level enough is: bubble centered by eye, fridge within its tolerance, no door swinging on its own, and no water pooling in the shower pan. Chasing perfection with a machinist's level wastes the first hour of every stay — center the bubble and go make camp. The same blocks-and-chocks kit handles it at every site, which is why it has a permanent line in the packing checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my RV fridge need the rig to be level?
Most RV refrigerators are absorption units: instead of a compressor, an ammonia solution circulates by gravity through a boiler and condenser. Parked off-level for long, the liquid pools in the wrong sections, cooling stops, and in the worst case the boiler overheats and the cooling unit is permanently damaged — a four-figure repair. Within about 3° side-to-side and 6° front-to-back is the commonly cited safe zone; visibly level is better.
Do I chock before or after unhitching?
Before — always. Chocks go against the trailer tires the moment side-to-side leveling is done and before the tongue jack takes weight or the coupler is released. A trailer that starts rolling with the tow vehicle detached has no brakes and no steering.
Are stabilizer jacks the same as leveling jacks?
No, and mixing them up bends frames. Scissor-style stabilizer jacks on a travel trailer exist only to stop bounce and wobble once the rig is ALREADY level — they are not rated to lift the trailer. Lifting is done by driving onto blocks (side-to-side) and with the tongue jack (front-to-back). Motorhomes with hydraulic auto-leveling systems are the exception: those jacks are designed to lift.
What if the site is too unlevel to fix with blocks?
Two or three inches of lift per side is the practical limit for stacked blocks — beyond that, ramps get sketchy and stabilizers run out of travel. Try repositioning within the site (a few feet often changes everything), try facing the other direction, or ask the campground office for a different site. A badly sloped pad is a site problem, not a technique problem.
